Karachi Declares Rain Emergency After Heavy Monsoon Showers

Daily Kausar News Desk – The Sindh government has ordered all public and private schools in Karachi to remain closed today (Wednesday) following heavy rainfall that caused widespread disruption across the city.

On Tuesday, continuous showers led to prolonged power outages, flooded roads, and massive traffic jams. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency and directed all essential departments to stay on duty round the clock.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office), some of the heaviest rainfall was recorded in:

  • Gulshan-e-Hadeed: 170
  • Jinnah Terminal: 153mm
  • Nazimabad: 149.6mm
  • Surjani Town: 145.2mm
  • Defence Phase VII: 134mm
  • Korangi: 132.2mm
  • Other areas, including University Road, North Karachi, Keamari, Orangi Town, also recorded significant rainfal

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has cancelled all staff leave and set up a Rain Emergency Cell. Fire brigades, municipal services, and rescue teams are on high alert.

Police and Government Response

The East Zone Police DIG Dr Farrukh Ali instructed all officers to stay in their areas and ensure water drainage, traffic management, and emergency response. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the bad weather.

Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani directed town chairmen and municipal commissioners to clear main highways first to ensure movement of rescue machinery. He also warned citizens to stay away from electricity poles and flooded roads to prevent accidents.

Meanwhile, Governor Kamran Tessori set up a 24/7 Rain Emergency Cell at the Governor House. Citizens needing assistance can call 1366 for help.

Citizens Face Hardship

Residents across Karachi reported long hours without electricity, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and traffic chaos. Many prayed for relief as rain continued late into Tuesday night.

The government assured that pumping stations are being run on emergency generators where K-Electric power supply was suspended.

Monsoon Outlook

The Met Office has warned of more rainfall in Karachi and other parts of Sindh in the coming days. Monsoon rains, which last from June to September, play an important role in replenishing water supplies but often cause floods, landslides, and displacement in vulnerable areas.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed all departments to remain on high alert and improve coordination for timely response during the monsoon spell.
